Why pre-tax deductions reduce your tax

Salary packaging moves part of your pay out before income tax is calculated. Your taxable income falls, so the tax on it falls too, and the packaged amount pays for the benefit at its pre-tax value. The saving is largest when the packaged dollars would otherwise have been taxed at your highest marginal rate.

Why there are caps

The concessions are limited by law. Salary sacrifice to super counts towards the concessional contributions cap, and packaging with a not-for-profit or hospital employer has its own annual limits. This calculator tracks the relevant cap as you type, so you can see how much headroom is left before extra amounts lose the concession.

Package including or excluding super

Job offers quote packages both ways. Use the include or exclude super switch so the calculator splits your package the same way your offer does before working out take-home pay.

The decision this tab will not make

The calculator shows outcomes, not suitability. It can tell you what a package does to tax and take-home; it cannot tell you whether your employer offers packaging at all, and it has no field for the administration fees some packaging providers charge, which come out of the same benefit the numbers here show.

Money sacrificed into super is also locked away until retirement for most purposes, and no line on this screen can price what that lock is worth to you. Packaging a car has its own arithmetic entirely; the novated lease tab exists because that arithmetic would not fit here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the super rate in 2026–27?

12%. From 1 July 2026 that 12% is worked out on qualifying earnings, a wider base than before which now takes in commissions and any salary you sacrifice into super. The timing changed as well. Super used to reach your fund quarterly, and it now leaves with every pay. It is still paid on top of your salary and does not reduce your take-home pay, so the practical difference is that your super moves whenever your pay does.

Salary inclusive vs exclusive of super?

"$80,000 inclusive of super" = base $71,429 + $8,571 to super. "$80,000 plus super" = $80,000 base + $9,600 employer super contribution on top.

When do HECS repayments start?

Repayments begin when income exceeds $67,000 (2025–26) or $69,528 (2026–27). Below the threshold, no repayment is required regardless of debt balance.

How does the marginal repayment system work?

From 2025–26, you only pay on income above the threshold, not your entire income. On $80,000 (2025–26): 15% of ($80,000 − $67,000) = $1,950/yr. Far less than the old system.

What was the 20% HECS debt reduction?

All HECS-HELP balances were automatically cut by 20% as at 1 June 2025. A $30,000 debt became $24,000. No action was required. The ATO processed it automatically.

Does salary sacrifice reduce HECS repayments?

No. Reportable super contributions are added back to repayment income. Salary sacrifice does not reduce your HECS obligation.
